About the Site

In 1994, technology was given greater emphasis at UES. New computers were purchased and ethernet connections were made. UES made a direct connection to the internet in 1994.Much student and teacher work on the first UES website was done in the fall in raw HTML. When Ms. Galas taught us how to make a web page in raw HTML and how to put our picture on the page in September, we were excited. Then she asked us "What should we do with all of these pages?" The resounding cry was to build a website. We were able to get an older server from ETU on campus, and began designing our site.

Net Day, Tuesday, March 5, 1996

In the spring of 1996, we began to use programming which precluded the need for the raw HTML. However, the students and teacher still felt that learning the raw HTML assisted us all in understanding web structure and enabled us to fix many of our own web problems and thus become fairly competent troubleshooters and problem solvers.

The original site had these links on the front page:

Students wrote up articles and informational pieces, took photos to document the school, events, field trips, and visits. Ms. Galas acted as editor and administrator. Students had a vision for a virtual tour which they began at the front of the school. They took photos from different directions, wrote text to accompany the photos, and then designed the pages with hyperlinks so that one could effectively "walk through the school in different paths", depending on the links they clicked on.
